divide 和 separate 兩個字在中文裡都常翻成”隔開”, “分開”
但它們的意思也是不一樣的
divide 通常指把原本是一個, 或一個整體的東西分成幾等份
比如安全島將一條路切成兩半, 山脈將地區切成兩半, 或把一群人分成幾組, 一個比薩分成幾片等
例如: The teacher divided the class into four groups.
The mountains divide the island down the middle.
separate 則是指使東西不會混在一起, 或是兩個以上的人不能在一起
例如: We separated the balls by their colors.
The little boy was separated from his parents.
所以呀, 用中文學英文常常會有這樣的麻煩呢!
