這個字多半是當修飾一般動詞的副詞用
比如：Turn the key clockwise. (以順時針方向轉動鑰匙。)
The gear wheels move clockwise. (這些齒輪以順時針方向移動。)
這兩句裡 clockwise 是修飾一般動詞 turn 和 move，因此是副詞用法
若把它當形容詞，那就是要修飾名詞了
像是：Hurricanes rotate in the clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere.此句裡 clockwise 修飾後面的名詞 direction，所以是當形容詞用
(北半球的颶風以順時針方向旋轉。)
那麼「反/逆時針方向」的英文又要怎麼說呢？
答案是 counterclockwise [͵kaʊntɚˋklɑk͵waɪz]
counter- 這個字首就是「反…/反抗/反對」的意思
不過這是美式英文的講法
英式英文裡則是用 anticlockwise [͵æntiˋklɑkwaɪz]
anti- 這個字首和 counter- 一樣是「反…/反抗/反對」的意思
用法和 clockwise 一樣
例如：Turn the key counterclockwise three times to lock the door.
(要鎖門時，將鑰匙以逆時針方向轉動三次。)
