在英文裡有好幾個以 out- 為字首的動詞
這個字首有「在…方面勝過/超越」的意思
像是 outnumber 是指在數字/數量方面勝過對手
outsmart 是指在智力計謀上勝過別人
outperform 是在表現上勝過比較的對象
而 outdo 這個字本身就是「勝過；超越」的意思
所以 You have outdone yourself. 這句話通常是用來稱讚別人的好話
表示他這次的表現比以前更好，超越了他自己之前的水準
比如你之前吃過朋友做的菜，這次她又做得更好吃
就可以跟她說 You have outdone yourself (again/yet again.)
其他各種事情只要對方表現又更上一層樓
我們都可以用這句話來誇獎
不過有時這句話當然也會被拿來當反話諷刺別人
比如某個人平常就已經常做錯事或做壞事
結果又做出更糟的事
也可以用這句話來表示他這次又捅了更大的簍子
當然我們也可以把主詞 you 和後面的反身代名詞 yourself 改成其他人
但都是要用現在完成式
