既然有人問起, 我就來補充一下囉~
其實會採用 PC 說法的, 都是因為它觸及一些敏感話題
比如和種族, 膚色, 階級或缺陷有關的一些字眼
現在最常用的應該就是把美國的黑人稱為 African American(s) (非裔美國人)
而不要叫人家 black people, the Blacks, 或更難聽的 Negro 或 Nigger (黑鬼)
(不過黑人自己稱別的黑人 Nigger 反而是一種親暱的稱呼)
另外在美國, 稱亞洲人為 Orientals (東方人) 現在也是 "大不敬"
都要叫 Asians (雖然這樣其實不會讓人把中亞的一些民族算進去)
"原住民" 現在也不能叫 natives 或 native people
而要用很難的字: indigenous [ɪnˋdɪdʒɪnəs] people
(但 natives 還是可以用來指 "當地的人", 只是不能用來指原始部落的人)
之前我們提的把殘障者 handicapped / disabled people 改為 physically challenged
也適用於講 "智障" 的人
從前 "智障" 叫 retarded
現在要叫 mentally challenged (智能上受到挑戰的)
但大家猜猜看, 所謂的 vertically challenged (在垂直方向受到挑戰的) 是什麼呢?
答案是: 矮子
說人家肥胖不能用 fat, 而是 overweight
"笨" 不要說 stupid, 而是 slow
而 "瘋子" 也不能說 crazy
而要說 mentally disturbed
"老人" 是 senior citizen (資深的公民) 或 elderly people / the elderly
"窮人" 則最好不要說人家 poor, 而要說 needy, 或 low-income
"服務生" 不要說 waiter / waitress, 而是 server
(因為 wait 本是 "伺候, 服侍" 之意)
"店員" 不是 store clerk, 而是 shop assistant
"空姐" 不是 stewardess, 而是 flight attendant
"佣人" 不是 servant 或 maid, 而是 domestic helper
"家庭主婦" 不再是 housewife, 而是 homemaker
"同性戀" 最好不要說 homosexual/homo, 而用 gay, lesbian
最後, "美國" 最好叫 the U.S. 或 the United States, 而不要再用 America 了
(但美國人自己用可以. 我們如果這麼用, 會得罪其他北美洲國家的人)
"英國" 則最好叫 the U.K. 而不是 England
(因為你可能會得罪不認同英國的愛爾蘭人或蘇格蘭人)
