freeloader 也可以叫 free rider
這個名詞的演變很有趣
最早時是字面上的意思 ”坐霸王車的人” (坐車不給錢)
後來引申演變為不好好工作卻佔用社會資源的人
比如在美國或一些社會福利做得太好的西方國家
就會有很多人好手好腳卻不認真工作, 靠領社會救濟金或猛生小孩領補助金過活
這樣的行為叫 freeloading / free riding
後來大家發現, “咦? 怎麼我家也有這種人?”
freeloader 於是不再僅指社會的寄生蟲
也用來指一個在別人家白吃白住的人
比如:
A: Who’s that guy on the couch?
B: Oh, that’s one of my brother’s freeloading buddies.
或是:
A: Ben has been squatting our couch for two weeks. (註: squat 霸佔)
B: What? Has he tried to look for a job?
A: Not that I know of. He watches TV all day and doesn’t help with anything.
B: What a freeloader! Why don’t you just kick him out?
A: I wish I could, but he’s my husband’s best friend in high school.
