因為它不是從字面翻
而是要從意思來想
「降半旗」通常是國家領導人或重要人物過世了會採取的哀悼方式
有時發生重大災難也會
注意中文裡說的「降」，其實在英文裡要用使役動詞fly「(使…)飛起來」
所以它要用 fly the flag / the flag fly at half-mast 這樣的說法 (旗子以半桿的方式飛揚)
mast也就是「旗桿」的意思
也可以用staff來取代mast
在美國，half-mast用來指船上的降半旗，而half-staff指陸地上的降半旗
因為mast也有指船上的桅桿的意思
