the big picture 是個在生活中很常用的詞
但不常去接觸教科書以外的英文的人, 可能會搞不懂它指的究竟是什麼
到底什麼是 ”大圖畫” 呢?? (別笑, 我還真見過這樣的翻譯......)
其實 the big picture 指的是一件事的全貌, 或是長期的遠景, 真正的目標
比如一個有才華也想成為藝術家的年輕人
卻因為想存錢買昂貴的禮物送女朋友而身兼數職, 賠上了健康
就可以對他說:
把一堆水準不夠的學校升格為大學, 讓考七分的人也可以去唸
搞到滿街都是用助學貸款唸完私立大學的年輕人
頂著大學生的光環, 卻因為唸的不是好學校而找不到好工作, 甚至找不到工作
我們也可以說: The government lost sight of the big picture.
有時候我們若不懂別人做某件事的用意
(有可能是真的不懂, 也可能是看不出這樣做有什麼實質意義)
也可以說: I'm not seeing the big picture here.
下次大家聽到或看到這個詞, 就知道意思囉~
