大家在文法課上通常會學到 fruit (水果) 這個字居然在英文裡是當作不可數名詞
可是有時看英文文章又發現它被加了 s
這到底是怎麼回事呢?
其實 fruit 當不可數名詞時, 是在泛指 ”水果” “這種東西”
比如要問人家喜不喜歡水果, 是 Do you like fruit? (O)
不能說 Do you like fruits? (X)
或 I’d like to have some fruit after dinner.
而不是 some fruits
(相對於可數名詞在被泛指時要用複數的原則
比如 apple 因為是可數, 反而要說 Do you like apples (複數)? 才對)
或是 What kind(s) of fruit do you like?
複數是在 kind 的部份表達, 看問的人想知道的答案是一種還是很多種來決定 kind 用單數或複數
但 fruit “這種東西” 仍是當不可數
但是 fruit 在指 ”一種” 或 ”幾種” 水果時, 就是可數的了
比如 The mango is a tropical fruit. (芒果是種熱帶水果)
(指某物種時用定冠詞 the)
The supermarket has a wide selection of exotic fruits.
所有不可數的東西在點菜或要表示幾份時也會變成可數
所以可以說 We’d like to order / buy two fruits. 來表示是兩份
不然要視店家使用的容器來當作單位很麻煩
另外, fruit 在當作 ”果實” 時也是可數的
像是 The tree bears a lot of fruits every summer.
Some of the fruits fell to the ground.
結論是, 其實就一般日常的用法而言, fruit 多半是要當不可數名詞來用的
不 過大家還是要想一想自己要講意思有沒有可能是其他兩種
還有要注意, “蔬菜” vegetable 反而是可數名詞
所以在泛指蔬菜這種東西時反而要用複數
像是 I like vegetables. / Do you like vegetables?
